Parliament has approved a budget of GH₵22.80 billion for the Ministry of Health for the 2026 financial year, focusing on essential operational needs. A significant portion of this funding, GH₵16.25 billion, will cover employee compensation, while GH₵4.51 billion is allocated for goods and services, and GH₵2.04 billion for capital projects.
The government remains the primary source of funding, contributing 71.40% of the total budget, followed by internally generated funds at 26.35% and donor support, which accounts for 2.25%. The budget also prioritizes health service delivery, which will receive 82.10% of the total allocation, ensuring that critical projects are completed.
With this budget, the Ministry aims to advance ongoing projects, including the construction of health centers, the redevelopment of La General Hospital, and the expansion of the Agenda 111 initiative. New projects slated for approval include a 500-bed pediatric hospital in Accra and various district hospitals.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh clarified that the budget does not include allocations for the National Health Insurance Scheme or the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, which together add approximately GH₵11.3 billion to the total health expenditure. He reassured that all newly recruited nurses will be on the payroll and emphasized the government’s commitment to completing existing health infrastructure projects.
